Also nothing you said is actually a fact. I can play Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast, right now on my phone for free. Nintendo, will in fact shutdown Wii multiplayer, Wii U multiplayer, and some day Switch multiplayer servers. The ability to make new purchases has just been / will be removed. Yes, the consoles that were enabled with online capabilities are sequentially shutting down their servers. I think preferring your physical games to be complete with patches (especially ones that fix game breaking bugs) to avoid these potential headaches in the future is reasonable. That's really my main concern - not servers shutting down per se, but being left to deteriorate.
Over a year and a half ago, there were also issues with patches not downloading for some PS3 games. Like the Wii/DSi, it was eventually silently resolved, thankfully. But that's still kind of an issue in and of itself, I'm sure the number of people affected that wanted to redownload purchased games in that time was tiny, but I don't doubt some were affected.Īlso earlier this year, some games that were downloaded from the PSN store to PS3 or Vita would have expired licenses and could not be played. The Wii (and DSi) servers did go down earlier this year, for around 3 months, but are up again now afaik. Nothing lasts forever, and while I do tend to agree that servers shut downs are probably not something most of us really need to be concerned about for a long, long time, I would not at all be surprised to see them happen in our lifetime.
